The village Matrei in East Tyrol has about 5,000 inhabitants and is located at 1,000 meters above sea level in the middle of the National Park region Hohe Tauern. Therefore, the surrounding mountain and natural landscape is in the centre of attention.

As regards the area Matrei in East Tyrol is the second-largest municipality in Tyrol. Apart from Lienz it is also one of the most important villages in East Tyrol. In particular this is true of tourism, because for several years Matrei has established as popular holiday destination - in summer as well as in winter.

Of course, the mountains always play a significant role, whether you admire them sitting on a deckchair or you conquer them on foot, by mountain bike or skis. During the warm season Matrei offers excellent preconditions for all kinds of mountain adventures: from strolls through an old larch wood and hikes from mountain hut to mountain hut to demanding tours to Mt. Großvenediger, Mt. Rainerhorn or other mountains over 3,000 meters.

Nevertheless you don't have to be a passionate hiker in order to get your money's worth in Matrei in the National Park Region Hohe Tauern in East Tyrol. For cyclists for example there is waiting the Iseltal cycle path, fly fishers will come together at the rivers Isel and Tauernbach and Matrei itself has not only an outdoor pool and a minigolf course, but also a riding-stable, an indoor tennis court and a climbing hall. Not to speak of the winter fun offered by the skiing area Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei.

Thanks to the long settlement history Matrei and environs provide some cultural sights, too. A large part of them dates back to the last centuries. In this connection we have to mention for instance the late baroque or rather classical parish church that ranges among the biggest rural churches in Tyrol.

The Romanic St. Nikolaus church, the chapel in the Gschlöß valley, the Local Museum or the National Park House in Matrei. The latter you should take into consideration during a visit at the National Park Hohe Tauern, because there you'll learn all you need to know about the nature and mountain world, its history, flora and fauna.
