The burning of witches in Sillian

The East Tyrol is an area where the ancient traditions, customs and legends handed down and still live, despite the advance of time and modernity. The population of this valley, surrounded by beautiful meadows and snowcapped feel alive and part of their daily lives, old rituals related to mythology and history.

In Sillian, for example, during the carnival, you can relive a very special custom during carnival, tied to an event happened in 1637.

The story goes that on that date, in the stronghold of Heinfels, a trial for witchcraft took place against a girl of only 18 years. Needless to say, the poor girl was burned at the stake after the trial.
To remember that episode, even today, during the carnival, in the village square is a fictional witch burning a witch at the stake.

The custom of burning of the witch in Sillian, also enshrines the end of Carnival and the beginning of Lent.
