Walking in Brixen

The city of Brixen is South Tyrol's oldest town. It is surrounded by vineyards, orchards and chestnut woods. Brixen offers its visitors endless opportunities for walks and outdoor activities! It is the capital of the Eisacktal Valley.

Brixen has a lot to offer. First of all we have the Bishop's Palace (Palazzo Vescovile). It is the former residence of the Bishop. The Pope has been spending his summer holidays here for the last few years. The palace has more than 70 rooms and inhabits a museum. In the Christmas period an exhibition for cribs is set up here.

Next to the Bishop's Palace we find the garden "Giardino dei Signori". It is really worth a visit, especially in summer. If you are interested in history, you shouldn't miss the Fortezza at about ten kilometers north from the city.

Brixen is also famous for its wine and chestnuts! In autumn an old tradition, the "toerggelen" is practiced. It is a meal where you eat roasted chestnuts accompanied by wine from the region.
