Longarone is located in the province of Belluno. It is known, unfortunately, for the dam catastrophe of Vajont that took place on the 9th October , 1963.
It is at about 500m above sea level. The village had been destroyed at the dam's overflow. But it has been rebuilt at the same place, on the right side of the Piave River.
Longarone is situated in the "Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Bellunesi". It offers beautiful and absolutely breathtaking landscapes. Longarone is crossed by the High Road No 3 of the Dolomites. It is also known as the" Alta Via dei Camosci" and starts in Niederdorf in South Tyrol.
If you like ice cream, come to Longarone! Here ice cream has an old history and plays an important role. The first "Fiera del Gelato", an Ice Cream Fair, was hold in Longarone in 1959. Today it is the headquarter of the International Exhibition of Artisan of Ice Cream.
