To Mount "Piccolo Lagazuoi"
The hike to the peak of Mt. Piccolo Lagazuoi is a real
adventure! You try to make your way ducked through rocky tunnels to
airy shelves and climb iron ladders. And, best of all, you make a
journey back in time. Here you will learn more about the 1st World
War. You have to know that most of the iron ladders and tunnels
were made by the soldiers during the war. Here the fights took
place, day and night, summer and winter.
Starting point of the excursion is the Falzarego
Pass next to St. Kassian. From here you have to take the
path 402 and follow it until you reach the Forcella Lagazuoi (2,573
m). Turn to the left and walk to the summit station of the cable
car (2,728 m). Following the path you come to the peak of
Mount Piccolo Lagazuoi. The panoramic view up here is
breathtaking. Overlook the Antelao, the Monte Pelmo, the Civetta, the
Langkofel, the Marmolada, the Tofane, the Fanes Mountains and the
Zillertal Alps! Simply fantastic! Reaching the Mount Piccolo
Lagazuoi will take you about 2 hours.
The descent is really exciting. First of all
you have to return to the summit station of the cable car. There
you follow the signposts to a shelf, where you can find the entry
to a 110 m long tunnel. It was build during the 1st World War. In
the tunnel you will find different wall charts with information
about the war and the history of the area. Every now and then there
are small windows in the rocks from which you have an amazing
panorama over the countryside.
The tunnel is very steep and dark. That's why you should take a
flashlight with you! At the end of the tunnel you
get to a short track with fixed-ropes and to another tunnel which
brings you directly back to the Falzarego Pass.
The tour to Mount "Piccolo Lagazuoi" is not very demanding, but
really popular and rewarding!
